Fresnel mirror technology
The ‘Fresnel mirror’ type of CSP system is broadly similar to parabolic trough systems but instead of using trough-shaped mirrors that track the sun, it uses long flat mirrors at different angles that have the effect of focusing sunlight on one or more pipes containing heat-collecting fluid which are mounted above the mirrors. The mirrors change their orientation throughout the day so that sunlight is always concentrated on the heat-collecting pipe.

SOLAR THERMAL TECHNOLOGY
Solar thermal generation systems collect solar energy as heat to raise steam for use like a conventional thermal electricity generating plant (steam turbines). Low grade solar heat is used for water heating and, less commonly for air/space heating, solar ponds and solar chimneys. However, it is high temperature solar systems that are most prospective for large scale power generation. Solar thermal technology includes technological approaches for both localized uses and dispatchable uses.
Solar Dish System
The third CSP technological approach, the dish/engine system, uses a mirrored dish concentrator (about 10 times larger than a backyard satellite dish) to focus sunlight onto a thermal receiver and a heat engine/generator. The receiver is located at the focal point of the dish.
To capture the maximum amount of solar energy, the dish assembly tracks the sun across the sky. The receiver is integrated into a high-efficiency “external” combustion engine. The engine has thin tubes containing

Solar Tower Systems
In a power tower system (also called a central receiver), a field of large two-axis, flat, tracking mirrors reflects the solar energy onto a receiver that is mounted on top of a centrally located tower, as shown in figure below;

The solar energy is absorbed by a working fluid (typically molten salt or water) and then used to generate steam, which powers a conventional turbine. Even when the sun is not shining, some designs can effectively store thermal energy for hours

Parabolic Trough Systems
A trough system consists of a large field of single-axis tracking parabolic concentrators, arranged in parallel rows that focus sunlight on receivers running along the focal lines of the concentrators. The solar field is modular and the rows of concentrators are aligned on a north-south horizontal axis.
The concentrators, which track the sun from east to west during the day in order to keep the sunlight focused on the linear receiver, are made up of parabolic reflectors (mirrors), metal

Solar chimney
In a solar chimney, an upward flow of air is induced by heating the air at the base of a tall chimney. The airflow up the chimney drives a turbine which generates electricity. Following an initial 51 kW prototype with a 200 m chimney in Spain, a larger 250 MW plant with a 1,000 m chimney was proposed for southern NSW. Development of this proposal has not proceeded and this technology is not proven for commercial operation.

The global module manufacturing capacity grew by 65% from 2007 to 2008 to reach 10.37 GW and very small incremental capacity in 2009 during the global solar downturn. India currently has a module manufacturing capacity of 1 GW, most of which is exported.

Solar Cell
The global cell manufacturing capacity grew by 81% from 2007 to 2008 to reach a capacity of 8.8 GW and further to 10 GW in 2009. The Indian cell manufacturing capacity is ~500 MW with few big players like Tata BP Solar (84 MW), Moser Baer (80 MW crystalline & 40 MW thin film), Indo Solar (160 MW), dominating the market. Both Tata BP and Moser Baer have domestic module manufacturing facilities which utilise part of the cell production while the balance is exported.

Solar Thin film materials
Thin film technology uses a variety of materials like Cadmium Telluride (CdTe), Amorphous Silicon (a-Si), Tandem Microcrystalline, Copper Indium Gallium Selenide (CIGS) etc. Thin film components are cheaper to manufacture owing to their reduced material costs, energy costs, handling costs and capital costs.

Poly-silicon (P-Si)
Metallurgical grade poly-silicon is the primary material of wafers used to fabricate crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells. It alone can account for 15-20% of the cost of a PV module. Currently India has minimal P-Si manufacturing capacity because of which Indian cell manufacturers are largely dependent on international tie-up for P-Si. This has been the most supply constrained element of the value chain globally and can have a cascading effect on the eventual cost of generation. This is the

Types Of Solar Cells
Photovoltaic modules that produce up to 100W or more of power are constructed by bringing together and connecting an array of solar cells. The properties of the module depend on the type of solar cell used. The following are the three main technologies currently used to create solar cells:
1. Crystalline solar cells:
The foundation for crystalline solar cell production lies with a block of silicon ingot, which is sawn into thin silicon wafers. The sawn wafers of 1mm thickness are then placed

Solar Photo-Voltaic (SPV) technology
Solar Photo-Voltaic (SPV) technology converts solar energy into useful energy forms by directly absorbing solar photons—particles of light that act as individual units of energy—and either converting part of the energy to electricity (as in a PV cell) or storing part of the energy in a chemical reaction (as in the conversion of water to hydrogen and oxygen).

Polycrystalline silicon
Multicrystalline PV involves a cheaper manufacturing process than monocrystalline silicon with the cells being cut from an ingot of melted and re-crystallized silicon. Sliced from blocks of cast silicon, these wafers/cells are both less expensive to manufacture and less efficient than single-crystal silicon cells. Research cells approach 24- percent efficiency, and commercial modules approach 16-percent efficiency. Polycrystalline silicon panels have efficiencies of 12% to 14% and can often be
Monocrystalline silicon
This is the most efficient technology to date. The PV is made from single crystals of silicon. This type of PV is the most expensive. Sliced from single-crystal boules of grown silicon, these wafers/cells are now cut as thin as 200 microns. Research cells have reached nearly 28 percent efficiency; with commercial modules of single-crystal cells exceeding 18%. Monocrystalline silicon panels should be utilized when a higher voltage is desirable.

Batteries are often used in PV systems for the purpose of storing energy produced by the PV array during the day, and to supply it to electrical loads as needed (during the night and periods of cloudy weather).
Other reasons batteries are used in PV systems are to operate the PV array near its maximum power point, to power electrical loads at stable voltages, and to supply surge currents to electrical loads and inverters.

Generally, solar modules do not have the structure needed to withstand wind loading, and so must be mounted on a mounting structure. Mounting structures are usually made of steel or aluminum and may be attached to the roof of the home in a fashion similar to that for solar water-heating panels. Mounting structures may be fixed mount, may allow the array to be tilted seasonally, or may, on pole mounts, be able to track the sun.

Working of PV Cell
PV technology converts sunlight (direct and scattered) directly into electricity when a PV cell absorbs and transfers the energy of the light to electrons in the atoms of the cell. A typical silicon PV cell is composed of a thin wafer consisting of an ultra-thin layer of phosphorus-doped (N-type) silicon on top of a thicker layer of boron-doped (P-type) silicon. The process through which the device converts sunlight into electricity is called the photoelectric effect. An electrical field is

History of Photovoltaics
The first PV cells were produced in the late 1950s, and throughout the 1960s they were principally used to provide electrical power for earth-orbiting satellites. In the 1970s, improvements in manufacturing, performance, and quality of PV modules helped to reduce costs and opened up a number of opportunities for powering remote terrestrial applications, including battery charging for navigational aids, signals, telecommunications equipment, and other critical, low-power needs.

His crisis managers took the team to a few areas in the plant where workers had put up huge placards saying, “Jab tak suraj chand rahega, Russi Mody tera naam rahega”.
